What if the world is deeper software than stone?
Imagine a civilization far beyond ours — not centuries ahead, but geological ages of computation ahead. If they can model weather, cities, and minds with perfect fidelity, they might run countless histories of their ancestors for science, art, or curiosity. Now ask a simple question: if many simulated minds exist for every “base” mind, where are you more likely to be sitting right now?
That is the emotional core of the simulation hypothesis. It is not “someone said the Matrix is real.” It is a probability story about nested realities and the kinds of beings that might fill them.
In a widely discussed argument, philosopher Nick Bostrom proposed that at least one of the following is true: almost no civilizations reach a stage capable of running vast numbers of conscious ancestor simulations; advanced civilizations that could do so almost never choose to; or we are almost certainly living in a simulation ourselves.
The force of the argument is combinatorial. If posthuman civilizations run millions of detailed histories, the ratio of simulated observers to non-simulated observers becomes enormous. Unless something blocks the path — technological failure, ethical restraint, cosmic rarity — the “default” location of a typical observer shifts toward the simulated layers.
Notice what the argument does not claim. It does not prove we are simulated. It organizes our uncertainty. It forces us to say which door we prefer and why.
Popular talk often quotes extreme odds as if they were measured. They are not. The hypothesis depends on assumptions about future technology, the nature of consciousness, and how many simulations would actually be run. Change those assumptions and the probabilities move with them.
Two cultural currents feed the hypothesis. First, computation became the metaphor of our age. Genes look like code; brains are modeled as networks; physics is written in mathematics that computers can approximate. Second, virtual worlds improved from crude games to immersive environments that already fool attention for hours. Extrapolate that arc far enough and “indistinguishable from base reality” stops sounding absurd.
Some physicists and philosophers explore related ideas under different names: the universe as information, digital physics, holographic principles, mathematical monism. These are not the same claim as “we are an ancestor sim on someone’s server,” but they share a family resemblance — reality may be more like structure and relation than like solid little billiard balls.
Here honesty matters. A glitch in a video game is designed to be noticed by players who know they are in a game. A serious simulation might hide its seams, or have seams we misread as ordinary physics. Proposed “tests” — looking for pixelation at the Planck scale, odd limits in cosmic rays, statistical anomalies — remain speculative. Absence of obvious glitches does not disprove simulation; presence of strange physics does not prove it.
The better philosophical move is to ask: what changes if it is true? and what remains binding either way?
Indian thought does not need silicon to ask whether the world is ultimate. In several Vedantic streams, māyā names the power by which the Absolute appears as a manifold of names and forms. The world is not always called “false” in the cheap sense of nonexistence; it is often called dependent, provisional, not self-standing. Līlā — divine play — suggests that manifestation can be real as play without being the final word about what is.
This is not a claim that ancient sages predicted video games. It is a recognition that “Is this base reality?” is an old human question. Simulation talk modernizes it with computers; māyā talk deepens it with metaphysics of appearance and ground.

Pain still hurts. Kindness still heals. Curiosity still opens doors. A simulated friendship can be as meaningful as a “base” one if the experience is genuine. In fact, many versions of the hypothesis make ethics more, not less, urgent: if minds can be copied and paused, moral status multiplies.
The fear that simulation makes life meaningless usually confuses “not fundamental” with “not valuable.” A novel is not less moving because it is written. A dream can transform a waking life. The worth of experience does not require that your atoms be the deepest furniture of the cosmos.
Hold two practices together. First, epistemic humility: you do not know the substrate of reality with certainty. Second, practical sincerity: act as if other minds matter, because every serious story of reality — base or simulated — still places you among beings who can suffer and flourish.
The simulation hypothesis is finally a mirror. It asks whether you need your world to be the bottom floor in order to love it — or whether love, inquiry, and responsibility can stand even if floors go deeper than we see.
